The SIPRE coring auger kit was developed in the 1950's at  the US Snow, Ice and Permafrost Research Establishment. It is a tool  for taking cores in ice and frozen soils. It takes a 3" core and can be  used to core several meters by hand and further if used with a vehicle  mounted drill rig. It is generally driven with a motorized power head  and raised and lowered by hand. It penetrates frozen soils easily as  long as there are no rocks or coarse sand present. The kit consists of a  3' long stainless steel coring barrel with a quick release drive head  and a cutting head with replaceable carbide tipped cutting bits. There  are extensions included for drilling four meters and associated spares  and tools. A gasoline powered drive motor is included to turn the drill.  Adapters can be made to use any other power units. It comes in a travel  / carrying case. Please call for current rental rates and availability.  A limited number of units are produced each year for sale and spares  can be custom made to order for older or different models.
